Jamie Jensen – The Afterlife of Route 66
Route 66 is likely the most famous road in the world – and for sure it’s the only road with its own hit song. The desire to do as the song suggests and “Get your kicks on Route 66” has inspired tens of thousands of people from around the USA and the wider world to hit this great old highway.
Join Jamie Jensen on the 100th anniversary of Route 66 for a special SCA celebration exploring how this legendary road came to be so beloved. Jamie will look at its history, including the “Dark Ages” of the 1960s and ’70s, when new interstate highways bypassed its towns and attractions and Route 66 was more or less forgotten, as well as its remarkable afterlife and transformation into a beloved symbol of Americana.
Drawing on decades of research and travel, Jamie will take us on a virtual road trip to iconic Route 66 attractions, from historic motels to roadside landmarks. Along the way, he’ll explore the many layers of meaning Route 66 has acquired over the years and consider why we care so deeply about this particular road, and the stories we tell about it.
