REMEMBERING BELL’S TOURIST CAMP, TEXARKANA, USA

On this 1930 postcard, Bell’s Tourist Camp shouts out to U.S. 71 motorists coming into Texarkana from the north.

Texarkana famously straddles the border between Texas and Arkansas, which splits the Post Office and runs right down the middle of State Line Avenue, U.S. 71, all the way to the Red River ten miles north. Here, Texas turns west to follow the river leaving U.S. 71 to be swallowed up by Arkansas. Bell’s operated on the Arkansas side of the line 22 blocks north of the Post Office where Bell Avenue now extends eastward from State Line Avenue.
