Marcia Bricker Halperin: When We All Met at Dubrow’s Cafeteria
Marcia Bricker Halperin, a lifelong Brooklynite, has been photographing the character and landscape of New York City since the 1970s. Her debut book of photographs, Kibbitz & Nosh: When We All Met at Dubrow’s Cafeteria, was published by Cornell University Press in the Spring of 2023.
Step back into the nostalgia and grit of 1970s New York City through poignant black and white photographs of the self-service restaurants that provided nourishment in more ways than food for a generation. Halperin’s images include portraits of customers and of workers. Other photographs capture the mid-century atmosphere of the eateries’ graceful and ultra-modernist interiors. Gossip, lipstick, powder puffs, cigars, kerchiefs, fedoras, and leopard pattern coats—all the cafeteria denizens’ accoutrements for dining on gefilte fish, kasha varnishkes, rice pudding, or blintzes are here.
