Gloria R. Nash: Looking Back at the Future:
Photographing Vintage Leftovers of New York’s World’s Fairs
Gloria R Nash’s book, Looking Back at the Future, takes us on a pictorial road trip back to mid-20th century New York City looking for leftover relics from two World’s Fairs. When she was a “‘tween” Gloria was a frequent visitor to the 1964-1965 Fair, held at the same site as the 1939-1940 Fair. After fifty years Gloria returned to the Fairgrounds in search of artifacts. Her explorations also led her to discover installations that had been relocated to other places in America. The book was published in 2024 to mark the 60th and 85th Anniversaries of the Fairs and to promote their history in what is now Flushing Meadows Corona Park, partially funded by the Fairs. Coincidentally, the NYC Parks Department recently announced its intention to destroy in-ground mosaic medallions honoring these fairs. While organizers designated both Fairs as failures, the public views them as a source of joy and with a growing popularity. Supporting their history makes sense.
