Andrew and Kelsey McClellan: The Golden Age of Sign Design – The Rediscovered Sketches of Beverly Sign Co.

In the summer of 2022, a group of sign painters joined together to save a ghost sign in the Ravenswood neighborhood of Chicago before the building was demolished. Under the siding, the 100 year old building revealed two signs in almost perfect condition, one being a 1930’s Wards Bread Sign painted by “Briggs Sign Co.”

This ghost sign preservation effort led to the rediscovery of a large collection of original sign sketches by Beverly Sign Co., the company Jack Briggs of Briggs Sign Co. would go on to start after painting that exact bread sign several years previously.
