Check out this amazing rescue of ‘hidden treasure’ 1950s gas station

Atlanta_Printmakers_Studio_Hapeville_GA

From Urbanize Atlanta: What used to be a “waste of prime real estate” has been reborn in downtown Hapeville as a unique, adaptive-reuse project that incorporated a 1950s gas station long hidden in plain sight, according to the redevelopment team.

The historic, south ITP city in the shadow of the world’s busiest airport has been on a roll, in terms of investment that’s sparked a downtown revival. Porsche’s expanding North American headquarters, a Texas developer’s massive townhome project, and a nine-building Modera-branded venture are all located within a few blocks of Hapeville’s main commercial street. Ditto for the 1950s former Amoco station that’s been reborn as creative studios.

From NWI.com: The landmark 88-year-old castle-shaped White Castle in Whiting is coming down to be replaced with a newer, larger, more modern White Castle restaurant. Joseph S. Pete

From NWI Times: A gleaming white fortress with turrets has been encamped at the intersection of Indianapolis Boulevard and 119th Street in Whiting for the better part of a century.

White Castle, 1879 Indianapolis Blvd., has guarded the downtown commercial district for 88 years. It’s been a place people have stopped to grab a sack of sliders on their way to or from Chicago, the Lake Michigan lakefront or the BP Whiting Refinery.

One of the first White Castles built in the greater Chicago area, the small wedge-shaped building resembles a castle on the outside and a diner on the inside, with a row of booths crammed into a shotgun space. It’s so historic that it’s been the subject of an exhibit at the Whiting-Robertsdale Historical Museum and been featured on a series of commemorative postcards.
