Amy Webb: Preserve Route 66: Preparing for the Centennial Celebration of America’s Most Famous Road

U.S. Highway Route 66 was commissioned in 1926 and served as a major east-west transportation route until the 1980s when it was replaced by Interstate highways. As the centennial anniversary of Route 66 approaches in 2026, learn more about how the National Trust for Historic Preservation is helping to preserve Route 66 sites and tell a fuller story along more than 2,400 miles of road between Chicago and Los Angeles through the Preserve Route 66 Initiative.
Amy Webb is a Senior Director for Preservation Programs at the National Trust for Historic Preservation. She currently leads the National Trust’s Preserve Route 66 Initiative, helping Route 66 communities prepare for the Route 66 Centennial in 2026. During the first 18 years of Amy’s 30-year tenure at the National Trust, she managed the Trust’s Heritage Tourism Program, a program that helped communities realize their heritage tourism potential through a community-centered approach. She has a Masters in architectural history and historic preservation from the University of Virginia.
