Amused in the Alleghenies: SCA 46th Annual Conference and Tours
CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS
The Society for Commercial Archeology seeks proposals for its Erie conference day of presentations on Friday, June 2, 2023. The SCA welcomes proposals from presenters eager to share their investigations into the history and architecture of the American roadside with a diverse audience of preservationists, stewards, academics, writers, photographers, and others.
Abstracts must be received by April 15, 2023. Submit abstracts via e-mail to main@sca-roadside.org with the subject line “Erie Paper Session Proposal.”
Individuals are encouraged to submit abstracts on topics exploring Northeastern roadside architecture, with a focus on the Great Lakes area, Mid-Century Modern commercial architecture, and preservation strategies for historic roadside architecture (restaurants, gas stations and motels) and tourism sites. Any topics related to the 20th century commercial landscape are welcome. Proposals for themed sessions are welcomed. Paper presentations are 20 minutes maximum accompanied by digital slides. Submit a paper proposal to share your knowledge with other passionate American roadside aficionados.
PROPOSAL REQUIREMENTS
To propose a conference presentation, please submit an abstract of no more than 250 words and the following:
- Title of presentation
- Name, title, and occupation of speaker(s)
- Mailing address and telephone number
- Email address
- Brief resume or curriculum vitae (no more than 1 page required)
Please note if you are submitting a 5-minute lighting talk.
More than one abstract may be submitted. Please follow the two guiding principles in making a presentation at an SCA conference: make it visual and make it fun!
Any individual interested in commercial archeology may participate in SCA conferences. Those accepted to present a paper session or lighting talk will be required to register for the conference; unfortunately, the SCA is unable to pay stipends or travel expenses of presenters. Membership in SCA is not required to attend the conference.
Presenters will be notified by April 30, 2023 if their proposal has been accepted. Don’t miss the fun in Western Pennsylvania this Summer. Conference registration information will be available at sca-roadside.org by Spring.
